2024 Annual Report

Creating
Connections

In our 2024 Annual Report, we are proud to share with you some of the powerful ways in which we, along with our partners, have been able to create connections - between kids and their Crew, teachers and their students, and schools and their communities.

For more than thirty years, EL Education has collaborated with educators across the nation to build a powerful, evidence-based model for transforming American schools. Our work involves creating connections: among students, among educators, and among great ideas and proven practices for implementing them.

Our 2024 Annual Report introduces another innovation: for the first time, we are sharing this report with you in a fully digital format. Below, you’ll be able to explore the power and joy of EL Education’s partnerships, see some of our game-changing instructional products in action, and hear from the teachers and school and district leaders teaming up with us to create the connections that lead to meaningful impact for students.

Welcome

Letter from Scott

  • These include educators in Madison, Wisconsin, where Elvehjem Elementary, an EL Education lab school, is serving as a locus of collaborative learning: a place where teachers and administrators from multiple schools can see innovative ideas in action, reflect on data, and share feedback and support. Madison’s lab schools are embracing all parts of our Three-Dimensional model and their students are excelling both academically and socially, outperforming the district interim assessment data growth from the end of 2023 to the end of 2024.

You’ll also see how Unlock ELD, an innovative new instructional product for multilingual learners, is achieving powerful results through EL Education’s partnership with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). A pilot study showed that in OUSD classrooms implementing Unlock ELD, the percentage of multilingual learner students who were on or above grade level in reading grew by nearly 20%, and that students in classrooms using Unlock ELD progressed at one and a half times the rate of students in classrooms not using the Unlock ELD curriculum in the same schools. In the words of Oakland administrator Nicole Knight, “The partnership between EL Education and Oakland can show this country what is possible for multilingual learners.”

Our third feature story showcases the Open World Learning Community (OWL) in Minneapolis. In 2024, we had the honor of renewing OWL’s EL Education Credential after a rigorous and collaborative re-credentialing process. The Credential recognizes schools who have demonstrated remarkable impact across the Three Dimensions of Student Achievement: Mastery of Knowledge and Skills, Character, and High-Quality Work. As a group, EL Education Credential schools outperform their state and district peers in both reading and math, for all subgroups of students.

EL Education’s model integrates strong school design, coherent instructional materials, and sustained professional learning into a single, impactful strategy. This report helps to illustrate the story that the data is telling us: connecting EL Education’s high-quality, research-based instructional materials with our expertise in implementation and professional learning leads to powerful gains for students. Over the coming year, as schools across the country adopt the new Third Edition of our award-winning ELA curriculum, and as they partner with us to bring EL Education’s model to life, we can look forward to multiplying the impact of the connections we are making together.

After just one year of support, the Madison Lab Schools have already shown impressive gains, both at the school level and within student demographic groups.

Both schools outperformed the district interim assessment data growth from the end of 2023 to the end of 2024, which was already impressive at +2.7% growth for all K-5 schools within the district.

Unlocking Gains for Multilingual Learners

Oakland Unified School District

Impact Snapshot

In OUSD schools piloting Unlock ELD, multilingual learners “On or Above Grade Level” on the i-Ready® reading assessment grew nearly 20% from the beginning to end of year—growth 1.5 times that experienced by schools in OUSD not using Unlock ELD.

At the same time, the percentage of multilingual learners “2 or More Grade Levels Below” at schools using Unlock ELD declined by 35%.

Together, these results underscore Unlock ELD’s potential in developing multilingual learners’ English literacy skills.
